Restaurant · Istanbul ocakbaşı

Motion film · Original music

Tahtasaray, a 23-year-old Istanbul ocakbaşı, launched a formal rakı-pairing programme. We built a 30-second reel that names all five pairings in the lyric of a native Turkish vocal track.

The photograph stays the source of truth.

Every motion clip in the final film traces to a single photograph the client already owned. Source on the left, motion on the right.

Beyond the photograph

Some shots have no source still. Where the brief asks for a moment the photograph couldn't reach — a macro detail, an establishing wide, a transition — we compose it for the film.

Frames from the film

Three moments from the master — the kind of beat the camera holds longest.

Frame at 0:04 — First pairing wide. The dish establishes the rakı; the camera doesn't show both yet. The audience waits.

The constraint

Tahtasaray is one of Istanbul's longstanding ocakbaşı restaurants — wood-fire grill, deep regional kebap tradition, formal rakı sofra. The brief was to introduce a curated five-pairing programme (five rakı tiers each matched to one signature dish) in a single 30-second reel, in Turkish, that would land equally with their existing müdavim clientele and a new generation of premium-hospitality diners.

The creative constraint: the brand voice needed to be confident, restrained, and unmistakably Turkish — not the trendy, English-loanword agency register that dominates most Istanbul restaurant content.

The decision

We worked from the photographer's existing tabletop stills — bringing each plated pairing into motion without a reshoot. Each pairing got its own 4.5-second beat: a wide reveal of the dish and the rakı, then a tight detail (a fork lifting cured beef, condensation sliding down a glass, steam curling off the kebap).

The music was original — a 30-second Turkish vocal track written specifically for the reel, produced with a male baritone, in which every line names a pairing. The chorus closes on the brand's chiasmus: rakının kebabı, kebabın rakısı — the rakı's kebap, the kebap's rakı.

Lyric edits were peer-reviewed by a native Turkish speaker mid-production. One round of corrections (subtler verbs, no creepy connotations — 'olgunlaşır' ripens, not 'dirilir' resurrects) tightened the register from machine-literal to genuine Turkish craft.

What left the studio

  • 30-second reel — 1920×1080 widescreen master
  • Five pairing beats across the rakı tier ladder and five signature kebap dishes
  • Native Turkish vocal track — written and produced for the reel
  • 31 marketing photo variants across four creative rounds

What it proved

Tahtasaray proves the lyric-as-pairing-named-vehicle format works in Turkish — and that a 30-second commercial reel can hold five distinct beats without feeling rushed. The vocal sits in a native Turkish register; the brand-voice rules (no English loanwords, formal Turkish register) hold up under sung delivery, on a track written specifically for this reel.

Note: the publicly visible Tahtasaray reel is a demo/portfolio piece, not a published ad. UK / EU advertising regulations around alcohol brand visibility constrain how it could ever be distributed publicly — but the craft proof is real either way.

In two languages

The same idea, in both languages, at the same scale. This is the bilingual promise — not a translation.
